Immediately after President Obama was sworn into office, Elizabeth Alexander recited her poem to the masses that had gathered on that cold winter day in January. The poem presents an even stronger concept of love that goes beyond â€Å"Love thy neighbor as thy self†, and even beyond â€Å"marital, filial, national. † Some believe the way to unity is to avoid being selfish, not hurting others, and treating others as you would your compatriots, your kin, or yourself. This poem suggests there is a love that extends beyond those whom we are familiar with to include â€Å"a widening pool of light. Finally, in relation to the present day, there is a sense of the immense possibilities (â€Å"anything can be made, any sentence begun†). This is contained in the words that may inspire others to action that may bring such a love closer toward reality. From disunity (â€Å"walking past each other†) to blindly â€Å"walk[ing] into that which we cannot yet see,† this poem now suggests the alternative of â€Å"walking forward in that light† guided by a new vision of a love that may unite us. I focused on the symbolic element of the poem, because I liked the presentation and how it flowed.It made me think about how far we’ve come in this country. How Texas Changed U.S. History Essay

The United States of America is the world’s leading super power. Through the years, there have been many events that occurred which contributed to the kind of nation it is at present. It is a country with a rich and extensive history behind it. One of the significant aspects in the history of the United States is the state of Texas. Texas played a crucial role in the development of the nation. This research paper aims to discuss how the independence of Texas and its membership and re-admittance to the Union changed the course of U. S. history. Texas was originally occupied by Indians before the 16th century (â€Å"Timeline†). Numerous tribes of Native Americans resided in what is now known as Texas, and they were the inhabitants before the place was discovered by the Spaniards (Calvert & Doughty 10). For more than a century, Texas was under Spanish control, as it was considered a territory of the Spanish Empire (Calvert & Doughty 1). The Spanish explorers first arrived in Texas in 1519, and Alfonso Alvarez de Pineda was the first one to explore the place and map the shoreline (Calvert & Doughty 10; â€Å"Timeline†). After de Pineda, there were other Spanish expeditions and eventually, missions were sent in Texas (Calvert & Doughty 11). In February 18, 1685, Frenchman Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle claimed Texas for France by setting up Fort St. Louis in Matagorda Bay (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Timeline†). La Salle was soon killed, but the Spanish were threatened by the actions of the French (Calvert & Doughty 11). As a result, the Spaniards eliminated the French port and established more missions. In addition, Spanish towns were built in Texas, such as San Antonio, Goliad and Nacogdoches (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Timeline†). However, the 19th century ushered in a time of struggle for Spain, as it began to lose its power over Texas due to the expeditions of Americans (Calvert & Doughty 11). In 1810, a group led by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla attempted to free Mexico from Spanish authority. The plan failed, but it caused restlessness in Texas and Mexico. In 1813, Mexican Bernardo Gutierrez and American Augustus Magee occupied three Spanish towns in an effort to topple the Spanish authority in Texas (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Timeline†). They failed. Spain soon realized that the Spanish settlements in Texas were not enough to secure it from the threat of other countries (Calvert & Doughty 11). The Spanish authorities thought that an increase in population was needed. American Moses Austin asked permission from the Spaniards in Mexico to be allowed to stay in Texas; this request was continued by his son Stephen after his death. In 1821, Mexico became independent from Spain, and Texas became a part of Mexico (Calvert & Doughty 11; Perry 505). The Mexican government agreed to Austin’s plea, and they had begun to let foreigners settle in Texas. In 1836, 50,000 people had resided in Texas; 20,000 of which were from the United States (Calvert & Doughty 11; Perry 505). Most of the Americans in Texas were cotton planters, and went there because of land opportunities (Perry 505). Moreover, these people brought slaves with them to help them with cotton cultivation (Calvert & Doughty 11). However, Mexico met slavery with opposition, as the country abolished it in 1824 (Calvert & Doughty 11; Perry 505). The Mexicans soon realized that they were being outnumbered, so they resorted to efforts that would curb the number of Americans in Texan soil (Perry 505). The Mexican authorities stopped immigration from the United States and banned arrival of slaves (Calvert & Doughty 11; Perry 505; â€Å"Timeline†). This move angered the Texans, but the tension continued to increase with the dictatorship of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (Calvert & Doughty 11; Perry 505). The discontent of the people increased with the imposed customs duties collection (â€Å"Revolution†). In an effort to gain their independence, the Texans started the revolution on October 2, 1835 (â€Å"Revolution†;â€Å"Timeline†). The revolution began in Gonzales, Texas (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Revolution†; â€Å"Timeline†). Texans repulsed the Mexican troops in Gonzales, and emerged victorious in the first battle in the struggle for independence (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Revolution†). The succeeding battles were also won by the Texan forces (Calvert & Doughty 11). In November 3, 1835, there was a convention in which a provisional government, based on a document called the Organic Law, was set up by the Americans in Texas (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Timeline†). During the said convention, the Texans held an election for gubernatorial and council positions. On March 2, 1836, American Texans declared their independence from Mexico and established a constitution which allowed slavery; David Burnet was the provisional president while Sam Houston was the Texas troops’ commander in chief (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Timeline†). Then there was the Battle of the Alamo. The Alamo is actually church originally known as the Mision San Antonio de Valero (â€Å"Alamo†). It was used by the Texan forces as a fort. Unfortunately, the Texan forces were defeated by the Mexican troops, under the leadership of Santa Anna. However, Santa Anna was not victorious for long; in April 21, 1836, he was captured by Houston and his forces at the Battle of San Jacinto (Calvert & Doughty 11; â€Å"Revolution†;â€Å"Timeline†). Afterwards, Santa Anna signed a treaty recognizing Texan independence (Perry 505). Texas became a republic (â€Å"Revolution†). In 1845, the Congress of the United States pushed to annex, or make the Republic of Texas a part of the United States (Perry 505). U. S. President James Polk signed a bill that made Texas the 28th U. S. state on December 29, 1845 (Calvert & Doughty 12; â€Å"Timeline†). On April 25, 1846, the Mexican-American war begun over the disagreement on the boundaries of Texas (â€Å"Timeline†). Mexico claimed that Nueces River was the boundary of Texas; Texans, on the other hand, insisted that Rio Grande was the boundary (Perry 505). The Mexicans were defeated; as a result, the United States acquired more than half of Mexican territories, including New Mexico and California (Perry 505). The independence of Texas was relevant in United States history. This is because it was the event that paved the way for the United States to obtain territories that would eventually be a part of it. The addition of states did shape U. S. history, as all these territories contribute to the general legacy of the nation. Without the new territories, the development and growth of the nation would not be the same, simply because certain elements would be excluded. As a member of the Union, Texas also proved relevant in shaping U. S. history. Texas did secede from the Union, but its participation in the American Civil War was still crucial in the nation’s development. The American Civil War came about as a result of Abraham Lincoln’s victory at the 1860 presidential elections (Perry 507). Lincoln was a Republican, and the Republican Party was created with the objective of abolishing slavery. The Southern states, including Texas, who were in favor of slavery decided to secede from the Union. These said states formed the Confederate States of America. Texas seceded from the Union on February 1, 1861 (â€Å"Timeline†). At that time, Sam Houston was a governor, and he opposed that decision to secede as he was a Unionist (Calvert & Doughty 12). However, he was outnumbered by pro-secession delegates at the Secession Convention (â€Å"Timeline†). On May 13, 1865, the last battle of the Civil War was fought in Texas (Calvert & Doughty 12; â€Å"Timeline†). The Battle of Palmito Ranch occurred close to Brownsville, more than a month after General Robert Lee of the Confederate Army surrendered at Appomatox, Virginia. On March 30, 1870, Texas was readmitted to the Union by U. S. Congress (â€Å"Timeline†). After the Civil War, Texas had several other contributions that did affect U. S. history. First, Texas helped the federal government defeat the Native Americans (Calvert & Doughty 12). From the Civil War until the Reconstruction, the western frontier was poorly guarded; the Native Americans bothered the residents, which were prompted to leave their homes. The U. S. government realized this problem and sent out federal troops to address the issue. These troops were helped by the Texas Rangers. The Texas Rangers started as a group of volunteers that helped curb Indian attacks (Connor 135). Eventually when Texas became a republic, they became an official, full-time corps that was employed to protect the frontier. After the battles between the Native Americans were over, they became agents of law enforcement in the state (Connor 135). The state of Texas also contributed to post-war animal industry with cattle (Calvert & Doughty 12). Except for hides and tallow, cattle were initially invaluable as the markets were too far. However, with the establishment of railroads, Texan cattle were able to reach more consumers (Calvert & Doughty 12). Nonetheless, it was the cotton from Texas that exerted more economic influence in the U. S. (Calvert & Doughty 12). As the railroads progressed in the West, there was enough land for the growth of cotton. The cotton grown in Texas eventually reached the world market. As a result, Texas became a major cotton producer in the U. S. by the year 1890 (Calvert & Doughty 12). Texas again participated in U. S. history in the 1890s, which marked an era of racial discrimination (Calvert & Doughty 12). Texas was one of the states that were characterized by much tension between the whites and the blacks and Hispanics. It all began in 1896 when the Supreme Court upheld that segregation did not infringe the 14th Amendment. Hence, Texas passed legislatures that encouraged and promoted segregation of whites and blacks in the community (Calvert & Doughty 12). Texas was also responsible for the Prohibition (Calvert & Doughty 12). There was a time when progressivism was rampant in Texas, and one of its most notable ideas was to forbid the sale of alcohol. The Texan progressives thought that selling alcohol was detrimental to a democratic society and its consumption was evil. In 1887, Prohibitionists relentlessly campaigned to ban alcohol. When it was thought that alcohol impeded the U. S. efforts in World War I, a law was passed in 1918 to prohibit the sale of alcohol beverages in Texas. In January 1920, the 18th Amendment, which prohibits the sale of alcohol in the entire country, was included in the U. S. Constitution (Calvert & Doughty 12). After the American Civil War, Texas proved relevant in the history of the United States. Along with the federal troops, the Texas Rangers participated in resolving the Native American conflict. Without the rangers, the endeavor would have been more difficult; the task was made easy by the fact that the rangers have been the guarding the frontier for a long time. Texas also contributed to the U. S. economy through its cattle and cotton industries. Segregation also occurred in Texas, an occurrence that would later cause the Civil Rights Movement to arise. Lastly, the Texan prohibitionists were responsible for the passing of the 18th Amendment. If Texas had not been readmitted to the Union, some of the aforementioned events may have never occurred, drastically altering the course of U. S. history. From its independence to its readmission into the Union, Texas proved to be an important player in the history of the United States. Its independence brought the United States the territories it has at present. Its readmission brought both social and economic reform that would not have possible if the state remained in its seceded state. Descartes on God Essay Rene Descartes is a famous French philosopher and is considered as the â€Å"Father of Rationalism. † The aim of his philosophy was to arrive in a solid foundation for knowledge. In order to arrive in this, he used a method called the Methodic Doubt wherein he doubted the senses, mathematics, and even the existence of god. It was only until he arrived with a solid entity called â€Å"the cogito† was Descartes able to discover the center of his existence. Upon finding this center, he was able to use this entity as a means into explaining the existence of the things he previously doubted. In regards to proving the existence of god, we need to tackle first why Descartes needed to doubt the existence of god. This was a very important step in his philosophy because the theories in his philosophy would have a sounder foundation if he was going to use them to explain the existence of God. As what was stated above, Descartes used the Methodic Doubt in order to arrive with the cogito and say his phrase â€Å"cogito ergo sum† or I think therefore I am. This cogito exists in a metaphysical plane because Descartes believed that everything that existed in the physical world were not real. The reasons why he had to doubt the physical world include the fact that the senses deceive us. Examples of these are a pencil which gives the illusion of bending after placing it in a glass of water. Others include dreams which a person would consider to be so real until they wake up in bed. And finally, everything in this world is subject to change which he presented after burning a piece of wax and then asking if the residue of the wax is still considered as wax. After doubting the senses, he soon went to doubt the validity of the physical world. In order to do this, he asserted that there is a malevolent demon that would deceive us into believing that what we perceive is real. Now that he was able to discard god as the foundation of true knowledge, we now shifts his focus to the cogito. However, being left with the cogito could lead to solipsism, a view wherein a person believes that only the individual exists, since everything existed except the cogito. So Descartes needed to prove the existence of God in order to validate the existence of the physical world and free his philosophy from the perils of solipsism. Descartes gave some arguments that led to his proofs of the existence of god. His first proof dealt with the nature of ideas. He classified different kinds of ideas such as those that are innate in a person and those that were received through experience. Being rationalists, he considered ideas cause by the experience doubtful since they do arise from the senses, which he discarded as the means for a clear and distinct idea. So, he shifted his focus to innate ideas, or ideas that have been with a person since birth, and placed the idea of god under this classification. Now, Descartes asked from where these innate ideas came. It cannot be from nothingness since something cannot spring out of nothing. In addition, a perfect idea like that of god cannot come from a less perfect being and so he concluded that there was a first cause that placed the idea of a supreme being in my mind. This argument of Descartes can be compared with that of Saint Augustine’s first cause. However, the difference here is that the arguments of Saint Augustine dealt with motion and change within the physical world. Descartes arguments on the other had, tackle solely with ides and from where they came from. In addition to the argument of a first mover, Descartes was able to prove the existence of god through his own mortality. He asked himself how a person could think of an infinite being, such as god, if there is nothing to compare this form of existence with anything. It is from his own finite existence that he is able to create a distinction between the two modes of existence and prove the existence of an infinite and perfect being that is outside him. His next argument was derived from Saint Anselm’s ontological argument. Here, Descartes tries to justify his argument through describing a triangle. Whenever we would think of a triangle, the first thing that would enter our minds are its attributes, i. e. that it has three sides, all its angles have a total of 180 degrees, etc. Just like whenever we would think of the idea of god, we would usually first think of his attributes which are being omniscient, all-knowing, etc. The difference here is hat although we are able to think of a triangle, thinking about one does not necessarily entail it’s existence. On the other hand, to think of god as a perfect and infinite being must entail that he does exists for to say that a perfect being does not exists would mean that we are depriving god of one attribute and thus making him less perfect. So given this argument, Descartes asserts that existence is needed for perfection for there would be a major contradiction within the assertion of a perfect being that is lacking of any attribute. Finally, Descartes finally says that this god cannot be a deceiving god which he assumed in the beginning. This god cannot be a deceiver for this attribute cannot be found in a perfect being such as god because the act of deceiving someone arises from a certain defect. Upon proving the existence of god, Descartes was able to expand this philosophy by proving the existence of a separate world. He was able to do this by stating that the physical world exists since man was given a certain inclination in order to perceive the world. This inclination was given to us by god and we must believe that the world is true for god would not deceive us with this special inclination that he has given. After reading the proofs of Descartes, I would have to say that his arguments are very solid and logical that it would be hard to think otherwise. However, my only problem with Descartes philosophy is that he used the cogito as a scapegoat to all the problems that he encountered. What Descartes would do is that from the cogito he would begin to explain certain things such as god and the physical world. He would then explore these ideas but when he begins to run of way to explain his arguments he would go back to the cogito. AN example here would be when he tried to explain the existence of the physical world. He simply had to rely on the existence of god and that the inclination he gave man to believe that this world is true. This explanation, to me, seems more as a matter of faith in god as a non-deceiving being rather than a rational explanation.

First, it will focus on the general points of view of religions that have similar sayings of relationships regarding sexual activity and the law. It will discuss and take different stands and approaches to several reasons to justify my opinion on a society as a whole. It will determine how it can be a major impact in the future, what conservatives say about this, and whether this will disturb the structure of having a perfect family and how the new generation will or can be influenced in future. Overall, almost everyone agrees that homosexuality is immoral. And practically in all cultures, the family is considered the basic societal unit. And allowing same-sex relationships disturbs the structure of traditional families, since they are the ones making the society. Marriage between one man and one woman is critical to maintaining social stability. Society as a whole pays a high price when marriage is devalued. You see divorce: you see single-parenting: you see a rise in out-of-wedlock pregnancies, Shari Rendall, director of legislation and policy for Concerned Women for America. In the United States, marriage has had constantly shifting roles in the lives of its citizens and residents. For example, a female figure is attracted to another female figure, while, on the other hand, a male figure is attracted to the other male figure. In this case, none of the gender is liked by the opposite gender of a male or female. And both of the same genders develop profound and emotional feelings for each other. Clearly, there are two types of gender that has been created, but how to use these genders and how to act upon them has completely changed as the world has become more modernized. People are becoming more advanced in their daily fashions and are getting less fearful of their actions as many are pulling away from religious beliefs and practices. Standing on a mountain surrounded by very less nature, as I see the world from my binoculars, people that are befriending abnormal behaviors have covered their eyes from woolen clothings, making their lives hard to breath from ease. Many proudly cheer and celebrate the changes they are bringing into the society, believing that it will better their lives. They, however, are unfortunate to capture the meaningful and magnificent life they can have without having to change the laws of perfect and sacred performances of marriage. Such people cannot get much further, and if they do, their celebrations are as tiny as the lens of the binoculars I am seeing the distance from, circulated by black paint from which the beauty of life is uncolorful and hard to imagine. As William C. Duncan states, Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a women. Neither this constitution, nor the constitution of any state shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incident thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a women, (2009, p. ). Regardless of what laws have constituted marriage as, the law of nature and various religions has forbidden same-sex relationships to be practiced as a normal conduct. One may change and redefine the meaning of what marriage is, but the true meaning, which have been followed for centuries by various religions and different ethnic groups of people cannot impel out the original concept of practice from its roots. Moreover, bringing changes to what marriage is or what it should be practiced as causes the society to be unstable and ignore behaviors that are immoral today and for future generations. Taking into account for future generations, since the planet earth is on the rise of adopting behaviors consisting freedom, how should people decide to hold their limits. If todays generation goes out of control, what should the later world or centuries be out looked as? It is hard to imagine that irregular behaviors are being welcomed more in society, and destroying the concept of sacred institution and peace. The more questions people will increase, the less the answers will be found. And if answers are not given, people stubbornly upset the societal structure and go astray. It is simple to adjust and accept matters that bring ease to our lives, rather to bring what is unusual for us human beings to watch and accept. Therefore, I strongly believe that same-sex relationships are not appropriate for citizens and residents of the United States because they create instability in the traditional family structure (heterosexual) and they negatively influence future generations. America is a free society which limits the role of government in the lives of our citizens. In this country, people are free to choose how they live their lives. In our free society, decisions about a fundamental social institution as marriage should be made by the people, (Duncan, 2009, P. ). I agree that people have the right to live their lives one wishes to lives as, but I also believe that people should stay in limits of certain things and be conscious of their behaviors. Just as a person would try to be away from doing things that can cause them physical or mental injuries, then how can such people (homosexual) be unconscious that adopting a gay or a lesbian lifestyle does not injure the society as a whole. Yes it may not cause physical damage, but I believe that, in future, it can bring such a disaster that people (heterosexuals) will be suffering from depression and tensions as they will see the new generations following the existing fashion of certain lifestyles and an increase in such behaviors. Once abnormal behaviors are in effect, who will then determine what is appropriate or not appropriate and what is acceptable or not acceptable in a society. Will people become more ignorant or is it the religion that has no or very less impact on peoples life. Who and what should be blamed of? Why these behaviors cannot be controlled before it disturbs the traditional family structure and the structure of having a right and guided society. The government giving so much freedom is the reason to why many people are taking actions to seek different rights, whether it is normal or an abnormal behavior. This is not to say that we should be deprived of our rights. Instead we just to limit the freedom and stay in limited rights. One reason why same-sex relationships disturb the traditional family structure is because the original and the so real purpose of marriage are to procreate. Since homosexuals are unable to procreate they should not be allowed to marry. Similarly, homosexuals are not fit to be parents even if they adopt and take a role of both, a mother and a father. Only a traditional heterosexual household is the best in which to raise children. In a homosexual relationship, at times, gender roles either do not exist or are unclear. And it is important for children to differentiate between a mother and father in nature and as expressively. Boys and girls have needs that can only be met by the opposite gender, and once understanding different figures, they will also come to know the different roles a man is suppose to play in society and in house and the different roles a women can play in society and in house. Because homosexual relationships are so unstable they cannot provide children with the security they need and the two different gender loves they deserve (Mckinon, 2007, p.2). On the other hand, if two same genders are legally married and given permission for certain obligations and the right for adopting a child, then what partner should be considered a father or a mother. How will the determination be considered- who takes a role of a mother and a father? I do not understand how any women can show a masculine love to a child when she does not hold masculine traits and powers. As Ava Mckinon states, another reason to why same-sex relationships should be objected because opponents of same-sex marriage seem to be concerned about the long tradition of marriage being between a man and a woman. Many opponents of same-sex marriage say that they are not against benefits for same-sex couples but believe the institution of marriage should be reserved for one man and one woman. Otherwise, they argue, it could lead to all sorts of other undesirable marriages such as polygamy, incest, and bestiality. Many religious organizations fear that the legalization will lead to rampant immoral behavior, (2007, p.2). Moreover, gay and lesbian marriage should not be allowed because it can influence future generations. If more children are being accepted by same sex partners, these children will lack knowledge of stabled families and will take these behaviors normal and acceptable. And if this continues to happen, what will be the norm of the society. Children raised by gay or lesbian parents will adapt such fashions too and become part of homosexuality. On the other hand, there are many questions that will rise when looked at the future of our kids. One is that, what will be taught to students in public schools in regards of marriage. Is the definition of marriage completely and continuously going to change? In a recent case of the state of Massachusetts, parents of young elementary school students objected to books meant to teach children to respect marriages and families involving same sex couples, Duncan, 2009, p. ). In account on reading this case, this shows that opponents of same-sex marriag e will be compelled to keep their kids home and keep them away from worldly and further knowledge. In this case, parents will be willing to give their children home education and build a stronger impact of religion on them. These problems can me a major loss to businesses and many governmental institutes. The businesses that provide public schools and organization with books and gives support with other kinds of educational material will need people to buy from them. And if people are giving home education and buying very limited books, it will be a disaster for businesses and difficult to run. And more institutes will be empty and with less people. This will cut down teachers, faculties and much more. Once thought about everything, questions will never end and there will always be a blockage for such actions to be performed. In order to have same-sex marriages in effect, every division in the society has to be looked upon very deeply. And moreover, this will be a radical change to the society. In a final thought, I agree accordingly to Duncan that, marriage promotes the integration of men and women: by treating both as essential to societys most basic and foundation unit, it rejects the idea that men and women, mothers and fathers, are fungible, (2009, P. ). For centuries, in religion, in law and in many cultures, marriage has always been practiced between a man and a woman. And same-sex marriage is just plain disgusting. Therefore, same sex relationships should not be courage to be part of a normal ongoing society. No one here wants to make their lives hell and disturb the tranquility that exists today. It may not be as perfect but at least it does not create instability in the traditional family and become an influence on the coming generations. Since that the world is becoming more advanced and highly fashionable, any laws passed from now will affect many of us. And decisions must be carefully examined before putting it in effect. Overall, my opinion is as strong as it was before, and I strongly oppose same sex relationships to be part of a regular norm in the society. I cannot also agree that the meaning of a marriage can be redefined at any time because this is a union between only a man and a woman. The whole concept of being in a marriage bond is to procreate, and so the same sex couples does not have the powers or the abilities to require all duties of a marital bond and procreate unless a third party of the opposite sex is involved. Marriage is a sacred institute, practiced in many cultures and religions all over the world. And changing its definition is undoable and forever to remain as followed. Sam-sex relationships cannot be given the permission or the name of marriage as union because they are very far from touching the roots of a marriage and fulfill its duties. A same-sex may adopt, but again that adopted child has come from heterosexual couples who have the ability to such power. In addition, mar riage is not the right term for same-sex relationships and they cannot be given same rights as heterosexual couples because they are not, in any sense similar to each other.

Researching Titles for the Enumerative Bibliography Fantasy literature was always something that I had read outside of class, almost guiltily, as if it didn’t constitute â€Å"real literature.† Faced with an opportunity, however, in which I could research anything I chose, the prospect of critically engaging a work I had enjoyed since I was in junior high proved too tempting to resist. I chose a topic, then, based on a favorite series of books, Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. I knew that critics spoke of the series as an allegorical reference to biblical events, but to limit the theology to just Christianity seemed too narrow to me. For the enumerative bibliography, therefore, I researched the idea that, while understanding the Christian undertones to The Lord of the Rings is one key to illuminating the text, other, more pagan ideas are also apparent in Tolkien’s writing. To begin my research, I went first to the note cards that I had prepared for many of the reference work in the library. After a significant amount of winnowing down, I picked five of the cards and began to search for criticism that would help me understand and build my argument. Unfortunately, I was forced to eliminate two of the cards rather quickly, as they provided no information useful to locating what I needed. Researching Titles for the Enumerative Bibliography Essay -- Personal Researching Titles for the Enumerative Bibliography Fantasy literature was always something that I had read outside of class, almost guiltily, as if it didn’t constitute â€Å"real literature.† Faced with an opportunity, however, in which I could research anything I chose, the prospect of critically engaging a work I had enjoyed since I was in junior high proved too tempting to resist. I chose a topic, then, based on a favorite series of books, Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. I knew that critics spoke of the series as an allegorical reference to biblical events, but to limit the theology to just Christianity seemed too narrow to me. For the enumerative bibliography, therefore, I researched the idea that, while understanding the Christian undertones to The Lord of the Rings is one key to illuminating the text, other, more pagan ideas are also apparent in Tolkien’s writing. To begin my research, I went first to the note cards that I had prepared for many of the reference work in the library. After a significant amount of winnowing down, I picked five of the cards and began to search for criticism that would help me understand and build my argument. Unfortunately, I was forced to eliminate two of the cards rather quickly, as they provided no information useful to locating what I needed. It is quite easy for a parent to jump to horrid conclusions upon hearing the word â€Å"marijuana.† What is unfortunate is that the majority lack true knowledge of marijuana for its practical purposes and the relevance it has had in ancient history. There are far more constructive and legal uses for marijuana other than for experiencing euphoria. For the past forty decades, many have protested for marijuana to be legalized as a drug for its medicinal uses and strength as an industrial product. Marijuana is formulated from a seed known as Hemp (cannabis sativa) which is a widely cultivated Asian herb of the mulberry family (Merriam-Webster). Hemp was an integral part of earlier lifestyles treating such ailments as gout, malaria, gas pains and nausea. There is no disputing that hemp is extremely versatile in its uses and it’s hard not to question why society cannot "milk it for what it's worth." The argument being if it were legalized there would be a highly significant increase in use, especially among the younger generations. However, alcohol, another horribly misused substance, is perfectly legal (to those of appropriate age), has no significant industrial value and showed a decrease in use upon legalization. It has also been proven to cause more damage than hemp giving the conclusion that there are far more benefits from hemp than alcohol. The only legal use of hemp found today is medicinal. Hemp is used in cases of terminally ill cancer and glaucoma patients who suffer from chronic pain. Although far from being a cure, it helps relieve eye pressure caused by glaucoma. Research also indicates that hemp eases the nausea and vomiting cancer patients experience during chemotherapy.

How Successful Was Daniel Kleinman in meeting the brief of the Charity?

For any charity, advertisement and raising awareness of the issue they are campaigning against is an essential part of their running. The NSPCC in particular find that raising awareness of child abuse is of vital importance, and this means that the advertisements they do broadcast have to be extremely effective. After studying an advert produced by Daniel Kleinman for the NSPCC, called The Ventriloquist, I have realized that in order to make an appeal advert as successful as possible, a number of devices must be used or taken into consideration. The whole purpose of Kleinman's campaign was to alert the public that there are millions of children out there who have no-one to turn to- and that by simply volunteering just a few hours of their week, they could completely change a child's life. The title given to the Campaign was ‘Someone to Turn to', which refers to both adults being more aware of Child Abuse trying to act more productively against it; and also to encourage children to talk to the NSPCC because they are always there for them. This advert in particular focused on alerting the public that Child Abuse is happening even in situations which may seem perfectly ordinary. The child in the advert was in supposedly safe environments with trustworthy figures that should have been protecting her- yet they all failed to notice what was going on, a point illustrated by the fact the man was sat right in front of them and perfectly visible, yet they still couldn't see him Other than all of this, the main aim of the charity is always to attract more attention to the problem and to encourage more contribution, whether it is through volunteering, donations or even through physically going out and taking action against Child Abuse. In my opinion, the advert is very successful, as it could have easily inspired all of the above events to take place. This is particularly impressive, as the brief Daniel Kleinman received would have been unbelievably difficult to fulfil, considering the sensitivity which has to be given to the subject. It needed to be treated with complete appropriateness, and Kleinman had to take care not to be crude or offensive, but at the same time still highlight the brutality of the issue, both physically and mentally. I feel this is achieved, and that the advert manages to tactfully show how sinister and malevolent the situation is through using effective scenery, expressions, or even silence itself; and therefore illustrates how isolated and mute the victim is. So what is it about the advert which makes it have quite so much impact? Kleinman used a number of technical devices in the advert, which contributed greatly to its success. For a start, he mixed visual effects and real people with animated effects and dummies. The ventriloquist act is very appropriate for several reasons- Firstly; it is a great allegory of how the man completely rules her life- so much that she has stopped being a real human being and is just controlled by him. Secondly, the whole principal of dummies is very chilling and ominous, and so people are alarmed right from the start of the advert when there is a dummy amongst a class of real children. This draws attention to the girl, and our minds immediately focus on her. One of the best used animated effects was the dummy's eyes. Using animation, the eyes were made larger than they should have been and therefore reflected the girl's emotions a lot better- similar to Dennis Potter's idea of using adult actors to represent children, as their larger bodies act as a kind of magnifying glass to the emotions and movements. They dummy's eyes have this very same effect. They are very expressive, and throughout the advert they look scared, uncertain, alarmed and sad; as well as constantly checking with the man before she speaks. Furthermore, at the end of the video after dismissing her mother's concerned questions, she closes her eyes for a few seconds so that her complete misery is made obvious. Another technical device used by Kleinman is the soundtrack of the advert, which uses a good mixture between silences, background noises and actual music. The advert begins with just the normal sounds of a school classroom, leading the viewer into a false sense of security, and when the dummy sat on the man's lap comes into view, it makes it even more disturbing and shocking. Then, as the dummy speaks with the man's voice, chilling music starts, making the scene even more alarming. This spine-tingling music is used throughout the advert, with the exception of just a few scenes, and results in a growing feeling of suspense, making the overall impact of the commercial much greater. An alternative method used by Kleinman in the soundtrack is silence, an effect which works perfectly in the play park scene. The play park scene is perhaps the most distressing, which is mainly due to the isolation of the surroundings. We are witnessing firsthand a form of Child abuse, and as the viewer we are made to feel helpless- we can see the abuse happening, yet we can't hear it or do anything about it. In this way, the video is extremely emotive, as it creates an urge in people to take action. However, it is not just the soundtrack which created this feeling, and many other elements of the advert contributed to its success- Obviously, the actual Character and Narrative were a fundamental part. The man who was playing her abuser was extremely convincing in his part, and at some points actually made the viewer cringe with how alarming the scene was. His facial expressions were completely composed, showing how confident he is in treating the girl like this, as if it were perfectly natural. Another part of his characterization which was as equally disturbing was his intimacy with the girl. Throughout the advert she is constantly sat on his lap, an allegory to his domination and control over her. Also, it stressed the fact that no-one can get close to her apart from him; and that she is isolated and separated from everyone else, even her own mother. Another affective part of the staging for the Advert is the fact that no-one else notices the man, stressing the loneliness and seclusion of the girl, and that no-one can get through to her. In fact, it is the exact opposite, and she is shunned away by people- particularly her peers. This is represented predominantly in the bus scene, when everyone is laughing at her- even the paedophile is smirking and appears to be mocking her. Overall, I think that the most important feature in the commercial is the use of narrative, and the swapping of voices. The girl can't speak for herself; instead the paedophile has completely taken over her life, always present and intimidating. The deep man's voice is grotesque, and immediately captures the audience's attention and shocks them, making them mesmerized with the advert and meaning they are affected as much as possible by the advert. Consequently to such enormous affects on the Audience that the advert motivates, it is clear that Kleinman must have used extremely great directing techniques to create such a result. In particular, Kleinman uses lighting and colours a lot to put empathize on the mood of the film, such as putting the Ventriloquist doll under a direct spotlight to draw the viewers attention towards her. This lighting effect also means that the doll has lots of shadows around her, especially falling on the Ventriloquist himself. These shadows represent the malevolence which surrounds the girl constantly, and how her whole life seems like a dark pit of despair. Another technical device which Kleinman used in the advert was the colouring used. Whilst the girl is around other children, the colouring is bright and energetic, as a children's life should be, but as soon as she is away from them it becomes dreary and sinister- an illusion of what her life is like at home. Throughout the advert, the background to the scenes is mirroring the mood of the soundtrack and lighting, putting empathise on the points being made even more. As part of my research for the making of this Advert, I watched an interview with Kleinman so that I could see what his objectives were whilst creating the advert. From seeing this, I discovered that Kleinman's idea for the Ventriloquist doll was drawn out of his desire to show how controlled and vulnerable abused children were. Using a Ventriloquist is perfect for this, for they are naturally chilling even away from any fearful situation. Kleinman felt that this automatically brought great tension to the scenes, and complete caught the attention of the viewer- the makings of an ideal advert. Owing to the number of effective elements of the advert mentioned above, it is logical that the impact on the viewers was extremely great. Any child-abuse advert automatically evokes sadness and sympathy from the audience; however because of the in-depth styles of directing which took place in the producing of this commercial, the audience are also made to feel complete empathy towards the girl, and it leaves them with severely distressing thoughts. However, one of the main necessities of the advert was that its message was clear to younger audiences, and in this way the advert does not produce very good results. Due to the depth of the allegorical devices used in the advert, it is quite likely that a younger audience would find it hard to grasp the idea and information which is being portrayed. This is one of Kleinman's only faults in the production of this advert. In the majority of circumstances, it is young children, who are suffering in these abysmal situations and therefore the appeals also need to be suitable for someone of that age group. What is the use in alerting the public of all these horrendous acts if the children themselves cannot realize what is going on and tell someone? Overall, I think that due to the complexity of the advert, it is not suitable for a younger audience, as it would not have the wanted affect on them and be equivalently useless. Despite all this, the advert is still incredibly emotive. So did Kleinman reach the Charity's brief? Personally I feel that he did, as the disturbing nature of the advert resulted in the utmost awareness from the audience, meaning that the appeal was even more likely to be successful. This reaction to the advert is exactly that which the Charity wanted- they are inspired to take action against Child Abuse and are made conscious of the reality that Abuse can happen in the most ordinary of situations.

Born on April 13, 1933, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell is one of the few politicians of note who rose in the political circles carrying proudly his Indian ancestry. â€Å"He is proud of his Native American heritage. † His sense of pride and loyalty to his roots and to his culture was seen through his actions as well as through his clothing; it was as if he was wearing his culture, identity and heritage. For example, he was seen wearing â€Å"ceremonial tribal clothing† as he attended the opening of the National Museum of American Indian (NMAI) . It was considered as a â€Å"major aspect† that has created, established and sustained the overall â€Å"persona† that is Senator Campbell all throughout his life, especially during his political life . Campbell’s personality of hinging so much of who he is as he presents himself to the public on his being a Native American Indian was just enough for people to forget that there were actually men who preceded Campbell who, just like him, were partly Native American Indian and also won elected public office. One of them served in an office even higher than Campbell’s – and that would be Charles Curtis, who would eventually become the first vice president of the United States who is a Native American Indian. â€Å"The highest elected office ever held by an Indian in the US was the vice presidency . † Unlike Campbell, Curtis was from the Kaw tribe hailing from Kansas. His sudden dissociation with the Catholic faith was a surprising turn of events for Campbell. There are many good things that the Catholic faith has done for Campbell, especially during his youth. For example, there is the role of the faith during the times they were sent to the orphanage by their parents because they cannot take care of him and his sister because of their mother’s sickness and their father’s alcoholism and inability to financially support them. While the Catholic faith and the orphanage system had their share of bad reputation, history points how the Catholic experience was a relatively good one for Campbell. In retrospect, Campbell recalled how the nuns and priests, who took care of him when his parents were unable to take care of him, treated him well. In his recollection of his days with these priests and nuns, as he narrated it for his biography published in book form, he mentioned just several instances wherein he was punished like being sent inside a pig pen to be with a huge pig. The reason for his pains against Catholicism maybe rooted in the things that he never verbalized, in the things which he only referred to as painful memories of his childhood, some of which he experienced in the orphanage . If he saw flaws in the orphanage, then it is not surprising if he also saw flaws in Catholicism because the two are one and the same during his youth.

Great Gatsby Coming of Age Novel Essay

The novel the Great Gatsby isn’t your classical coming of age novel at least for the most part. This is because Nick Caraway is the only character who actually ends up changing by the end of the novel. Furthermore coming of age novels refer to a character(s) that pass the rite of passage in order to enter manhood or womanhood. Therefore this novel is about the growth of maturity. The story begins with Nick attending dinner at the Buchannan house. Nick was at first very impressed and fascinated with the beauty, glamour, and wealth of Daisy and Tom. This can be seen in the quote â€Å"Their house was even more elaborate than I expected† (Fitzgerald, pg.6). This point of view is oblivious and is unaware of the saying â€Å"it’s not what’s on the outside but what’s on the inside. However this point of view drastically changed by the end of the novel. By the end of the novel Nick can no longer even bare to stand the sight of Tom or Daisy, let alone shake their hands. This is best seen with the quote â€Å"What’s the matter, Nick? Do you object to shaking hands with me? Yes. You know what I think of you.† This is because Tom told Mr. Wilson to go and kill Gatsby because he had been the person driving the car. Furthermore he can’t stand Daisy because even though she loved Gatsby she retreated behind Tom and let Gatsby take the hit for her. This resulted in Gatsby’s death and later his funeral to which neither Daisy nor Tom attended. The strongest representation of Nick’s growing maturity is the fact that he realises that Tom and Daisy are both weak and gutless people. This understanding was only obtained when Nick looked for what was on the â€Å"inside†. The quote â€Å"They are careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made†¦Ã¢â‚¬  is really powerful and Fitzgerald is warning others about people who are like this. The novel The Great Gatsby may not be a coming of age novel but it is a  pretty darn good book about growing in maturity, following your dreams, and fighting for love. Unfortunately Nick is the only character who actually realised this and learned from it.
